POSC 3003 Political analysis

An undergraduate introduction to the systematic, quantitative analysis of politics

The textbook situation is slightly but unusually complicated.  Two related texts are required for the course

Starting in spring 2009, I am placing textbook orders for these items in a package that also includes SPSS for Students which is the student version of the data analysis software which will be used in the course. This three-piece bundle of the Essentials and Companion and SPSS for Students is about $25 more than the price of the just the two books and will allow you to complete coursework away from those campus labs where SPSS is installed (assuming you have a PC that is relatively new so as to meet the minimum requirements of the currently-shipped version of SPSS for Students, something you must ascertain for yourself); note that SPSS for Students is a limited license and that, accordingly, the program will only be serviceable for about one year. If you do not have a PC that meets the minium requirements of SPSS for Students Version or if want to give up the convenience of working away from campus labs in order to save about $15, you may order the Essentials and the Companion from CQ on your own.  It's a free country, and you are free to get the package with SPSS or not, but it's not a totally free country--you must buy the two textbooks.

As the semester wears on, I may also assign supplementary readings, either from the web or on-line journals.

The Higher Learning Commission, which is the accrediting body for ASU, requires all syllabi to identify learning objectives; so, after completing POSC 3003, where the goal is to provide an undergraduate introduction to the systematic, quantitative analysis of politics, students will demonstrate

    • An understanding of the elements of the (social) scientific method
    • The ability to interpret results from univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses
    • The ability to perform univariate, bivariate, and multivariate analyses
